Finland is a member of the Schengen Area, in which states have jointly agreed their visa requirements towards third-country nationals. So, whether you need a visa to travel to Finland depends on the regulations concerning your country and the passport you hold.

Finland Visa Types

There are different visa types, including single-entry, double-entry, multiple-entry and airport transit visas, that enable holders to enter Finland for stays up to 90 days in periods of 180 days. A single-entry visa grants one-time entrance, whereas double-entry visa holders may travel twice during designated times. On the other hand, a multiple-entry visa allows for consecutive visits that do not exceed the time constraints.

What is a Schengen Visa?

Uniform Schengen Visa is a short-stay visa type that allows its holder to move freely within the Schengen Area for a period of up to three months. This visa also allows freedom of movement within the 29 member countries of the Schengen Area, namely the Schengen States.

Finland Category C visa- For Short Stay Visits

Schengen Visa allows travellers to stay in Finland for up to three months. This visa is often issued for tourism, business travel, and family visit purposes.

Finland Category D visa- For Long Stay Visits

A Category D Visa, or a National Visa, allows its holders to stay and reside in Finland for more than three months. This visa is usually granted for work, study, family reunion, or research purposes.

General Requirements to Apply for a Finland Visa

You can find Finland’s tourist visa requirements and application procedures below. Applicants must submit their applications to the Diplomatic Mission or authorised visa application centres in due time. Please bear in mind that the necessary documents may differ depending on the term and purpose of your stay, hence the category of your visa.

  • The visa application form – filled in and signed,
  • A passport with at least 2 blank pages, issued within the previous 10 years, and valid for at least 90 days after the end of travel. Copy of the first page, including personal data and previous Schengen visas if obtained,
  • One passport-size photograph,
  • Travel insurance with a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000,
  • (If the applicant is a minor) parental consent,
  • (In the case of a private visit to an acquaintance) A free invitation letter,
  • Your travel itinerary, proof of means of transportation, proof of accommodation in Finland,
  • Proof of sufficient financial means to cover the duration and purpose of the stay – EUR 50 a day,
  • Any additional documents asked by the diplomatic mission,
  • Payment of the visa fee.

What is Visa Sponsorship for Finland?

If you are unemployed, a student, or a pensioner and cannot provide proof of sufficient financial means (EUR 50 a day at minimum), a relative can be your sponsor. The person who signs the proof of sponsorship form guarantees that they shall cover your expenses in Finland.
